WEDNESDAY AT 3PM: Constituents Rally to Demand Rep. Walters Protect the Environment
Irvine, CA— On Wednesday, February 15, dozens of concerned citizens from the 45th Congressional District will gather at the Irvine office of Representative Mimi Walters to demand that the Congresswoman stop sponsoring and voting for legislation that threatens to harm the environment and start listening to her constituents’ concerns regarding climate change and pollution.
Representative Walters received tens of thousands of dollars in donations from the oil and gas industry for her 2016 Congressional campaign alone. She has repaid the generosity of her financiers by sponsoring legislation (H.R. 637) that would gut the ability of the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate greenhouse gasses, voting and by routinely voting to curb Federal environmental protections.
These actions undermine the quality of the air and water her constituents share and demonstrate a shocking level of indifference towards the potentially catastrophic effects of global climate change. With new proposed legislation on the horizon that would dismantle the EPA entirely (H.R. 861) and disrupt existing efforts to combat climate change (H.R. 673), Mimi Walters’ anti-environment agenda threatens to cause greater harm to her constituents than ever before.
Southern California, including the 45th Congressional District, has an environmentally conscious population that overwhelmingly supports clean energy and does not want to return to days of heavy pollution. Moreover, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, only 39 residents of the 45th Congressional District worked in the mining, quary, oil and gas industry as of 2014.
Residents of the 45th Congressional District who are concerned about Walters’ positions have been emailing and calling the Congresswoman’s offices for weeks without any meaningful acknowledgement or response. Undeterred by Rep. Walters’ attempts to ignore the input of her constituents, local residents will gather at Mimi Walters’ Irvine office to let the Congresswoman know that they oppose her disastrous environmental policies.
WHAT: Constituents petition Mimi Walters to protect the environment.
WHERE: Representative Walters’ Office 3333 Michelson Drive Suite 230 Irvine, CA 92612
WHEN: Wednesday, February 15, 2017, 3 p.m.
WHO: Dozens of people, representing a broad coalition of concerned, unaffiliated residents of the 45th District, will participate and voice their concerns to Congresswoman Walters. Organizational support for this meeting is being provided by 45th Congressional District of California Constituents, Indivisible OC, Orange is the New Blue, the Orange County chapter of the Democratic Socialist of America and Together We Will, as well as a variety of other local organizations.
“We are taking a stance that silence is violence” said Jessica Riegert, a resident of the 45th district and a member of the Democratic Socialist of America, continuing that “if we stand aside or do not speak up, we are allowing Representative Walters and her friends in Congress to keep hurting our communities. This is true when it comes to protecting the environment and our fellow human beings. We are standing up to demand that Walters stop supporting policies that promise to harm the environment and her constituents.”
This action builds upon weeks of phone calls and visits to Mimi Walters’ offices attempting to relay constituent concerns to the Congresswoman. Representative Walters has refused requests for meetings, her staff has expressed ignorance as to when the Congresswoman would even return to Orange County, and Walters has even begun locking her office to avoid listening to her constituents entirely. Despite the Congresswoman’s repeated attempts at obstruction, residents of the 45th District continue to demand that Mimi Walters hears and serves the people she is supposed to represent.
