Racist attack, not Trump’s comments, draws out local GOP House members

"While President Donald Trump was widely criticized for not immediately denouncing the racism behind Saturday’s violence in Charlottesville, Va., at least three Republican Congress members from Southern California were at the forefront of such condemnation.

“The hatred and bigotry on display in Charlottesville has no place in our society. We must unite and speak out loudly against it,” tweeted Rep. Mimi Walters, R-Laguna Beach at 9:22 a.m. Pacific Time, after violence had broken out but more than an hour before a car allegedly driven by a white supremacist plowed into a crowd, killing one and injuring 19.

“My prayers are w/ the victims in Charlottesville,” she tweeted shortly after the car incident. “I’m disgusted & horrified by the white supremacism displayed today. We must defeat hate.”
